just curious...any one try to do an accounting of how much moolah your raw food diet costs you??
i've been vegan for over 15 years, and am used to the "but it's so expensive..." argument. really, beans and rice can be real cheap.
however, i haven't seen a convincing "i'm raw *and* i do it on food stamps!" pov.
anyone?

Re: as abba sez... money money money...
Tue, April 28, 2009 - 5:30 PMThe grocery bill is definitely less if you go local & in season. Out here (Bay Area) there are some really good raw food restaurants but, compared to grocery bill for prepping the same at home, I feel like it's a bit pricey. In other words, it's not uncommon to get a SAD restaurant meal for far less than it would cost to make at home (because it's crap), but with raw diet it tends to be the opposite, I think.
My bill for myself and two kids (one of which is a teenage boy) is close to $300 a month, but we are not 100% raw - probably closer to 70%. I get local organic produce delivered to my house on a weekly basis, which accounts for about $200 of that and the other $100 goes for milk, cheese, eggs, coffee, and dried goods. -

Re: as abba sez... money money money...
Thu, April 30, 2009 - 9:58 AMwhere O where has the raw vegan gone? If there's wisdom in it, best sift it out for us, because it's also packed with meat and cooked foods themes, regardless whether there are references involving the concept of Organic.... Here's some Wisdom, .... cooking renders organic minerals and other living essences which are organic by virtue of being unprocessed.... these are rendered INorganic by cooking..... Nonorganic except as a shadow of how they were produced with minimal chemicals/processing, ... only to be Subjected to the Dramatically unhealthy consequences of what heat does to food. There's a whole science to this, which is missed if you follow all the tangentizing concepts that cooked food eaters rely upon to sort of reMojo energies back into what had lifemojo already (or was not the best choice to eat in the first place because it couldn't be eaten raw).

Re: as abba sez... money money money...
Fri, July 24, 2009 - 11:47 AMdue to computer breakage issues i haven't been on tribe in a while... but am glad to see your response now!
in the meantime, i have talked with one other friend who was "raw on foodstamps" for almost 2 years. that info and your post are definitely inspiring! (the only other raw food eating friend i have typically spends far more...)
for those that don't know, a foodstamp budget is typically $200 or less per month...
i think the most intimidating factor for me personally is not produce so much (yep, i used to work produce in a co-op, i've been growing a few little things in the little garden space i have) but things like nuts, avocadoes, coconuts etc... which don't grow on trees in Portland, Oregon, sadly enough. Been thinking of trying to get a list going of figuring out not price by weight but price per "cup" of certain bulk items. Haven't saved up enough for that great food dehydrator in the sky yet, but did finally get a champion...
Anyhow... thanks, BiteMe, for sharing your money story!

Re: as abba sez... money money money...
Sat, July 25, 2009 - 9:43 PMGeez! I can't imagine feeding three people on only $300 a month on any diet!!
I do keep track of my expenses in Quicken--every penny I spend gets entered and categorized. I'm raw for 6 weeks now and am afraid to look at the total, to tell you the truth. I will soon because I do need to know. I've been organic as much as possible for several years, though, and I can say that my food bill just for me alone is probably close to $600 or even more than that. I buy avocados, nuts, seeds, some specialty products like raw, organic maca, cacao, coconut oil, etc. I buy my salads at the salad bar because I like a wide variety of ingredients and if I buy them separately, I can't possibly use them all up by myself.
I still don't have this down as far as how much to buy for one week, how long things will last before spoiling, etc. I'm still buying too much and throwing some of it out. Sad to say. I'd love to find a cheaper way to go. I'm sprouting in my kitchen to the best of my ability--still kinda floundering around with that. I live in a very small urban apartment with no place to grow food unless stuff would grow in one small window with morning light. My orchids do very well there. -

Mon, August 3, 2009 - 5:27 AMI know in the beginning I probably was spending more because I bought tons of raw nuts and a few specialty items as I switched out my SAD pantry for healthier raw items.
